Emotional Presence — The Leadership Skill That Helps You Stay Steady, Empathic, and Effective When It Matters Most

Emotional Presence

By Sue Reynolds-Frost for Forbes Business Development Council

Leadership today requires more than expertise. It requires presence. Emotional presence is the ability to stay grounded and constructive when the situation becomes challenging. It is the capacity to remain open during tough conversations, to listen fully, and to respond thoughtfully instead of reacting impulsively.

In this December 2025’s Forbes Business Development Council Editor’s Choice article, we explained that emotional presence is not about removing emotion from leadership. It is about regulating your internal state so you can show up in a supportive, stabilizing way for others. Leaders who develop emotional presence create psychological safety, build trust more quickly, and communicate with clarity during moments when people are looking for direction.

This matters for leaders who are navigating hybrid work, diverse teams, shifting expectations, and environments where change is constant. Emotional presence becomes a tool for strengthening connection, improving decision-making, and showing up as a steady partner for colleagues.

At Sloan, emotional presence is one of the four pillars of the Executive Presence and Influence (EPI) model. Through coaching and development experiences, we help leaders practice emotional regulation, reflective awareness, and grounded communication.
